After playing stints with the Blacktown Vikings and Ryde Spartans, Kevin came to the Pirates in 1992 and quickly established himself as an integral and versatile part of the Club.

 

During his career with the Pirates he played Offensive and Defensive Line, Linebacker, Running Back, Tight End and Place Kicker, but it was mainly on the defensive side of the ball that he made his mark.

 

Kevin may best be described as an old school player, where what you saw was what you got. Not fancy, not flashy, but big and strong, Kevin also possessed surprising speed, an attribute that served him well either closing in on an opponent to make a tackle, or closing in on the goal-line for a score.

 

On Defense, Kevin could usually be found in the thick of the action, either taking on opposition blockers and creating lanes for his tacklers, or pursuing the ball carrier all over the field. His size and speed made him a big weapon on Offense, and he surprised many opponents by his turn of pace and ability to catch the football.

 

He finished his career with over 300 tackles, scored more than 100 points, and a rushing average of over 5 yards per carry, and that’s just a part of the story.

 

He also made huge contributions to the Club off the field where he served as a Coach and Coordinator, and as a part of the Clubs Executive Committee for a number of years.

 

Fierce...aggressive...determined...loyal…all words that suitably describe the career of Kevin Fonti.
