If ever there was a Pirate endowed with a fierce intensity and a will to win, Mick Schweitzer was it.
Mick was a stalwart on both sides of the ball starting with the Defensive unit in 1987, but he switched to Offense and became a record-setting Running Back in 1990. In fact, his record of Most Rushing Yards in a Game - 272 yards against the Sutherland Seahawks - still stands today.
His playing career was put on hold between 1991 and 1993, but Mick made a welcome return to the Club in 1994 and made some spectacular plays as a Defensive Lineman and at Running Back.
He played Offense exclusively in 1995 and showed the young guys the way when he became the Clubs leading rusher, and in the process was voted as the Clubs M.V.P. Offense.
His on-field time was interrupted again in 1996 when Mick held the job of Club Statistician, but his love of the game saw him return to the field as a full-time Defensive player in 1997.
At the end of the 1998 season Mick was named Lineman of the Year after leading the team with 6 sacks and 3 fumble recoveries.
Complete statistical records were not kept during the early part of Micks career, so there is no real way to quantify what a contribution he made to the Pirates in the Clubs early days, but during the latter years its known that he averaged just under 5 yards per carry as a Running Back, and recorded almost 200 tackles a Defensive Lineman.
Add the numbers to Micks competitive nature, his knowledge of the game, and his indomitable spirit, and its easy to see why Mick Schweitzer is one of the Clubs favourite sons. |
